On June 10, 2013, our lives changed forever. Our youngest daughter, Emerson, was born that morning at 27 weeks, weighing just 2 lbs and 5 ounces. We spent the next 67 days in the NICU. The emotional and physical challenges of NICU life tested us unlike anything we had ever experienced. Surviving this experience ignited a desire in us to give back. We wanted to express our gratitude by giving back everything that was given and done for us.
After our time in the NICU, we’ve been lucky enough to become an Ambassador Family for some great organizations. I’m now an advocate for NICU dad support, mentoring dads in the NICU and providing information. I work with several organizations focusing on family-centered care and NICU family support. I also present and speak publicly to raise awareness about the trauma experienced by NICU dads.
